SIX FEET UNDER Frontman: 'Everything I've Written Has A Special Place In My Heart'

April 14, 2007

Keith Carman of ChartAttack.com recently conducted an interview with SIX FEET UNDER frontman Chris Barnes. A couple of excerpts follow:

On the band's new album, "Commandment", due on April 17:

"I'm happy. We came up with good songs and had fun writing it. What else is there to say? Each song is something special. Nothing's different on this record. It's business as usual."

On the notion that some have described "Commandment" as a regression from the experimental aspects found on 2005's "13":

"We stick to our formula enough that fans aren't too surprised. I don't think anything we do is experimental. We just try to progress our sound each time. I'm certainly not surprised by anything on this record other than that I keep things going in a good direction and I have good ideas. I just bear down and attack [songwriting] in the same way I always do."

On whether the idea of bloodshed, mortality and grotesqueness is wearing thin after more than 90 songs — not including Barnes' early '90s stint as frontman for seminal gore core outfit, CANNIBAL CORPSE:

"I like every song I write. I don't have a favorite song.

"Everything I've written has a special place in my heart. They have their own personality and mark a point in time. I'm proud of the storylines. I've always been interested in the idea of mortality. Reading my lyrics is evident of that. I think mortality, death, life and the horror of everything between — the darker side of existence — are infinitely interesting. That's why they'll always be at the forefront of my writing."
